Spice up Trick or Treating
Nothing says Halloween like the sight of kids running through yards dragging heavy bags filled with candy-coated treats. It’s obviously a great time for the kids, but it can be just as enjoyable for you as well, no matter how you are participating.
Whether you are following the kids around, or waiting for the little ghosts, goblins, princesses and pirates to come knocking, here are some tips to spice up your night.
On the move (right behind the kids):
Heading out with the kids? Here are some easy ways to add a few unique touches and fun to your evening.
- Take up booing : Trick or treating is all about receiving, but why can’t it be about giving, too? It can and many families are already doing it through booing. The simple idea is that instead of knocking and waiting for those king-sized Snickers, leave a small bag of goodies at friends’ or relatives’ houses. It’s a fun way to add a little variety to your door-to-door candy run.
- Play dress up: Sure the name of the game is filling that bag, but the simplest joy of trick or treating is being dolled up in a fun costume. Play along with a theme your kids are going with, or add a simple touch or accessory to get in the spirit.
- Group trick-or-treating: Everyone is heading out at the same time, so get together with friends or family and go out as a group. Going in one big group is safer, and it also allows you to have some adult companions as your kids hunt for sweets.
Passing out the candy:
Sitting near the door waiting to pass out that lovingly selected assortment of candy? Here are a few ideas to add to the enjoyment for you, and those little trick-or-treaters.
- Add some atmosphere: There are countless ways to add some appropriate creepiness to your official treats station. Line your yard with cardboard graves or sheets hung from trees to look like ghosts, play creepy music or even just replace your usual light with a different color (orange? purple?) Any small touches will make the few hours fly by, and will make your stop the most fun for the kids.
- Enjoy some treats yourself: You don’t (we hope) plan to go with the “one for you, one for me” system of passing out candy, but you can still enjoy a small indulgence. The fall is filled with ideas. Whether you sip on warm cider and hot chocolate or nibble on a homemade candy apple and roasted pumpkin seeds, be sure to treat yourself.
- Work in some tricks with your treats: Don’t just pass out the goods without having some interaction. Whether its holding an impromptu costume contest between the kids, or offering extra candy for the trick-or-treater who can get a Halloween trivia question right, add in a subtle bit of fun.
Whether you are taking part in the running around, or just enjoying the kids’ and all of their excitement, be sure to enjoy the one time of year filled with this much creepy fun.
